Week 10
It's Christmas Time - Merry Christmas everyone!
A big thank you for all the wonderful support I have received 
this year.  Weka class is made up of very special children.  It has been 
wonderful being part of their lives.  Good luck to those
children who are leaving St Paul's this year, I know you will be 
STARS at your new schools.  

Homework this week - there is none!!
EXCEPT - you must, must, must read everyday, even in the holidays, 
whatever it is, a comic, magazine, newspaper, book, map, 
travel brochure - avoid that summer slump and read something.

We will have our class Christmas Party on Wednesday - please 
do not bring any lunch it will be my treat.

Remember Kristkindle this week - we will be exchanging gifts 
on Friday morning before we go to the Leavers Mass.

Please make sure you have returned all your library books.

Remember we are swimming Mon-Thurs so bring your togs.

Don't forget you are presenting your How They Croaked and 
Saints/Inspiring People work this week - so don't leave
it at home.  We will set up little sharing spots in the room
and everyone can show what they have done.

Wow - this is time of year when we all get a little bit crazy with lots to 
do before school finishes.  Keep checking the school calendar, newsletter and 
facebook for all the news.

If you have a device please remember to bring it to 
school everyday (make sure it is charged).

Keep bringing in your loose change to support the 
Advent Outreach Challenge.

This week you need to make 2 lists of the following.  
Check that you spelled the items on your lists correctly.  
Each list should have at least 10 items on it.  
Get creative with ways to present your lists – use pic collage,
 comic life, make a poster or any other way you can think of and if you are able to email it 
to me before the end of the week or hand it on Friday.

Mufti Blue Jeans Day 29th November please bring a gold coin to support diabetes awareness.

·      Reading book amnesty – have a look around the house and return any library or journals.
·      Please check that the swimming assessment has been completed online – 
we have our first session this Thursday at 9.30am

a lipogram is a piece of writing that omits (leaves out) one letter – 
usually a common one like the letter ‘e’.  
Your homework task is to write 3 sentences about a pet omitting the letter ‘i’.

The oystercatcher stays close to the beach to look for food.
Please check that your sentences do not include the letter ‘i’ before

Welcome back everyone.  I hope you caught up with your sleep over the weekend!
Homework this week 
Choose one memorable moment from your camp week and write a short piece describing 
why it was so special to you.  Remember to include the who, what, where, when, why and how 
needed to give me all the information.  Try and paint a picture with the words you
use .  Remember to proofread and edit your work.  Once completed you may email me your
memory or hand it in on Friday.

Week 4
 Congratulations to our successful touch teams who competed on Friday at 
Garin College.  The Year 5 and 6 was first and third and the competition grade 
and third and fourthin the participation grade.  Well done and thank you 
to the parents who came along and helped out on the day.  I really appreciated it.  
We are very thankful to the Garin Students who have come
 in over the past 7 weeks to coach our teams and teach us skills.

Term 4 Week 3
We had lots of Zumba fun last week with Sally.  We learnt lots of great moves and from
different countries around the world.  We certainly got fit!
We are really enjoying learning about the bush, especially native trees and how
they survive and how they are classified.
Camp Fundraising this week - ice cream,  ice cream,  ice cream - bring
along $3 on Wednesday.  Thank you to Mr Stevens from Talleys and Mrs Mills
for organising this. 
Remember your PE gear this week.  The Garin students will be in on Tuesday 
and Thursday taking the final skill sessions in preparation for the 
tournament on Friday.  
Children who are attending the Top of the South Touch Tournament on were 
given a note to take home last week.  
We still need parent managers for the teams attending – 
let me know if you can help out.  We leave school at 9am and return about 2.30pm.  
Children not attending the tournament will be with Mrs Bryant in Hoiho for the day.

 This week we begin our inquiry titled ‘Survival of the Fittest”.  
We are learning about how native plants are classified and how they adapt and 
survive in the bush.  If you know lots about plants and would be able to
 come along and talk to us please let me know.  
We are hoping to go to Salisbury School on Tuesday morning to identify plants – 
if you can come please email me.
This week we are very lucky to have the Mission team who are currently 
visiting our parish coming in on Friday morning.  We have just completed our 
RE unit on Healing and the Sacrament of Anointing.  
On Friday night there is a Healing and Anointing 
of the Sick Mass at church, which the children maybe interested in going along to see.  
Details are in the parish newsletter.  We are beginning on Saints and Inspiring People next.

The Garin students are coming back to help with our Touch tournament teams.

The holidays are nearly here with just one week to go.  We have
had a super busy term with lots of fun learning.  This week is
pretty busy as well - on Tuesday our class will be attending Mass
at 11.30am.  It is also the next round of the Tackle Sevens Competition
at Henley School.  Good luck to the boys who are competing from
Weka.  A special thank you to Mr Waters and Mr Marsh for all the time
they have put into coaching this team.  
Remember to bring PE gear on Tuesday and Thursday for
touch practice with the Garin students.  
It's great seeing all the devices coming into school.  Please remember to 
bring them in each day.  
A number of children have decided to enter the Minecraft competition 
run by Interface magazine.  Children will be able to work together on
these on Friday afternoon.  These entries need to be uploaded to 
youtube or screenshots taken.  The competition closes 6 November.

Ideas for the holidays - keep reading! 
Find some books in the library
and see how many you can read over the holidays.  Check out what other
kids have recommended on the wall in the classroom.
Watch movies with the subtitles on - this is a great way to keep reading.
Have some fun playing board games or baking.  
If travelling, keep a diary to share when you came back to school
of the places you visited and the things you did.

A busy week ahead!  The Book Fair starts on Monday and ends
Friday.  You are able to buy books before and after school, up
until Friday where there is only sales in the morning.
As part of the Book Fair celebration each class is has
adopted a theme.  Weka Room has embraced Roald Dahl.  On Friday
there is a parade and children are asked to come along to
school in costumes.   Choose any character from any 
Roald Dahl books and dress up.  It will be a lot of fun.  In class
we have read Fantastic Mr Fox and we currently
reading the The Twits.
Could children please remember to bring their devices (IPads) to 
school if they are able to. 
Remember calendar orders must be in by Wednesday 18th, our
theme is Hundertwasserhaus houses.  We are really
enjoying exploring the works of this artist.
Please remember to bring your PE gear on Tuesday and Thursday.  
We are really lucky to have Garin College students teaching
us touch skills.
Weka Room is presenting assembly this Friday in Takahe.  You 
are most welcome to join us.

Week 7 Term 3

It was great to see all the effort that everyone put into their 
speeches last week.  We certainly learnt a lot about
the topics that were spoken about.
We are having a lot fun learning about Newtons Laws of Motion.
Over the next 3 weeks the children have been asked to 
choose one of these Laws, find an experiment or
design their own experiment which demonstrates a Law.  
Most of this work will be in class but they may wish
to trial their experiments at home. They will be asked to
present this work in the final week. They may present in anyway
they wish e.g. using their IPADs or devices using applications such as iMovie, 
Showme, pic collage, book creator OR they may wish to 
make their own science board.  They will need to record their 
information using the scientific method and include the procedure
and write a report on their findings.
We start our PE unit on Touch Rugby this week.  Senior students
from Garin College will be teaching the children
different skills on Tuesday and Thursday.  Can all 
children make sure they have their PE gear at school.

My email is up and running but the blog is still experiencing some
 problems with updating posts hopefully I can get that sorted this week.
We are having a fascinating time learning about Isaac Newton and his Laws of Motion.  
Expect to have some experiments done at home (hopefully not too messy!).
Well done to everyone on the hard work you are putting into your speech presentations.   
We even got to taste some amazing chocolate biscuits and real chocolate on Friday -

receive emails, as well as a host of other problems, hopefully this will be sorted out

following topics.  Speeches are to be 3-5 minutes long.  Power point presentations 
will be allowed to complement your speech.  Your speech will judged on the criteria attached to 
your homework sheet.

Homework Week 8 Term 2 We had a fabulous trip to the museum last week, it was amazing seeing the
Roman Machines.  We have been looking at the legacy of the Romans in our

topic inquiry – our visit helped our understandings.  A big thank you to all our
parent volunteers who came along and helped.
We are very busy making our mosaics.  Can you help – we need safety glasses,
 tile snips, old tiles especially black, green and red. 
Mathletics – please complete 500 points this week – if you haven’t already
 tried the geometry and roman numeral questions have a go at them. 
Spelling HomeworkProverbs – proverbs are popular saying which contain advice
or state a generally accepted truth. Most proverbs are worded in a way that they can easily
 be remembered and have been passed down through time.  Ask your parents/grandparents
about proverbs they may have heard when they were growing up.  Proverbs often use
metaphors and it is in understanding these metaphors that can help us work out their
meaning.  For your homework this week – find 3 common proverbs and find out what
they mean.  Remember these proverbs may be used in our class quiz coming up in week 10.

Homework Week 6 Term 2

Well done to all the children who competed in the cross country last Thursday,
it was a beautiful day in the sun and lots of fun.  A number of children in Weka
Room also competed in the year 5 and 6 rippa rugby tournament last Wednesday
at Henley School, a special thank you to our parent helpers and coaches. 
This week we are focusing on Roman Art – making mosaics.  On Wednesday
afternoon we are lucky enough to have a mosaic artist coming to speak us.  If
you have any old tiles or plates that we could use in the construction of our own
mosaics could you please send them in to school.

Thank you to the children who have bought in books for us to send to the schools in need in Vanuatu.  If you have any picture or chapter books that we could send to Vanuatu could you please send them in next week.
We have a very busy week ahead.  
On Wednesday a number of children are involved in the year 5/6 rippa rugby tournament which is being played at Henley School.  
On Thursday the school is holding its cross country at Rabbit Island.
On Friday, Weka is presenting a liturgy to the school.  Our theme is the Holy Spirit.
A number of children are not completing their mathletics – Please complete at least 300 points this week.

Homework Week 4 Term 2

What a super busy week, last week was.  Thank you to Mrs Thomas, Mr Marsh and Tylers Nana for 
supervising teams at the hockey, it was a great day out and we did very well with the Rascals in a shoot out in the Year 5/6 mixed grade for 2nd and 3rd position.  Also thank you to Mrs Thomas and Mrs Winch for helping with 
the food preparation on Friday.  The food was delicious who knew broccoli and cauliflower could taste that good!! Children were asked to bring along $3 to support a needy school in Vanuatu – Weka class also thought 
it would be really helpful for the school if we could bring along from home a book that is no longer read.  The school library at the Vanuatu school only has 1 shelf of books.
Some children are busy preparing for the year 5/6 rippa rugby tournament.  Thank you to Mr Marsh and
 Mr Waters for their lunchtime coaching.  Remember to check the school calendar on the website for 
upcoming event.
We had great fun stuffing plastic bottles with plastic – can you keep sending in bottles (not square shaped 
or milk bottles) along with plastic rubbish.  It was surprising what we picked up on the walkway clean up – 
a pair of overalls!

Part of our celebration includes getting out into the community – Weka Room along with Hoiho and Kereru is undertaking an exciting environmental project.  On Wednesday we plan on collecting rubbish from the walkway (alongside the motorway).  On Friday we will stuff plastic bottles with rubbish to make plastic bricks.  These bottle bricks are being made for an Earthbench project at Victory.  Please visit www.earthbench.org for information on this amazing work.  We will need parent helpers on Wednesday – an email with more details will come out today. Could children please bring to school throughout the week plastic bottles and plastic rubbish e.g. plastic bags, wrappers, receipts, twist ties, shiny paper etc.  During the week we will be reading and writing about the impact of plastic on our environment particularly oceans and sealife. 
Spelling Homework – Capital Letters Words begin with capital letters for a number of reasons.  This week’s homework requires you to find the capital cities of the following countries, spell them correctly and then find 5 countries of your own choice and their capitals.  Find some really interesting and unusual countries and capitals.

Welcome back, my thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by the storm.  We have a great term planned with our inquiry based on the Roman Machines that are currently on display at the museum.  We will be visiting the exhibition as a class in June.  Have a look at the links under Romans on the blog.

  • Reading each and every night and please make it sure it is signed.  Visit www.oxfordowl.co.uk and select an ebook from the list that you can watch.  Choose from the 7-9 or 9-11 year group.  There is a good selection of titles in both age groups.
  • Dream Chests - look for pictures of your favourite role models or quotes from famous people who inspire you.  Find out information about the careers that interest you - check out information on the internet, maybe send an email to a university or interview someone about your chosen career and include this information in your dream chest.  Bring along items to decorate your dream chest - make it something really special.
